But there are several good Nasi Padang restaurants in Ubud that are of course... One on Jalan Hanoman, and two on Jalan Raya Ubud the main road . Frankly, I don't think you have missed too much.. Crispy duck many years ago was meaty and delicious. And it became a famous food because it used to be good. Now it's mostly just famous for being famous. There is such demand for duck now, the farmers are harvesting them when they are very small and have very little meat. To me, you can make almost the same thing yourself by marinating a duck in some spices and then putting it in a deep fryer until the duck turns very very dark brown.. Unfortunately, we were seemingly mislead. The crispy duck we were served was unseasoned and contained very little actual meat. Obviously, we were not expecting a lot as this is a duck not a steroid filled chicken BUT - It was more like a fried duck satay chicken and 'beef' was of a dismal quantity for a main meal. Unsure of the origin of the beef as it tasted very different to any beef product I have ever tasted previously. We were not hungry so we ordered a dish to share for two plus we each ordered fresh pure juice and kangkong. The waiter looked annoyed and asked why we did not order one dish each of duck. We explained that it is an odd hour and we have had our lunch. The food came and we loved the duck. It was crispy and juicy. We also loved the orange pure juice so we ordered another 2 glasses of those. When the additional 2 came the taste was different. The most famous restaurants for this cuisine are Bebek Bengil BB and Bebek Tepi Sawah BTS. My task this time is to compare the two. They have many other variety dishes in the menu, but I only compare their crispy duck only. The duck’s size As you can see from the pictures below, the size is the same. They cut one duck into half, deep fried and serve it on your plate. On Par The crispinessThey both are crispy and that’s what people like about it. But I find that BTS is more crunchy and crispier than BB. But BB is definitely juicier inside. I can still taste the herbs that they season before cooking the duck. On ParSide Dishes/SaladThey both serve Balinese vegetables and BB even adds some cut oranges slices or watermelon slices on the plate. I personally like BB vegetables than BTS. Although BTS serves a generous portion of long green beans, but the taste is not to my liking, whereas BB gives just a small portion but it tastes so much better and more authentic. 1 Vs 0Sambal/condiments BB serves 2 types of sambal, while BTS shown on pic above gives 3 types of sambal. If you notice, they actually serve the same type of sambal. BB serves only two types because they help you to mix the shredded red shallot on the left with the cut chilies onto one plate. BTS separates the two. The other red brownish sambal on the right is the sweeter sambal and thus it tastes less spicy. Now, who is the winner on this sambal? Bebek Tepi Sawah has a great view of the rice paddies and although we haven't tried everything on the menu, the crispy duck was so great my friend went back the next day for a second helping. Bebek Tepi Sawah has a great view of the rice paddies and although we haven't tried everything on the menu, the crispy duck was so great my friend went back the next day for a second helping. Staff were very attentive and helpful, too, which is a big plus. Will be returning to this place. The restaurants sets itself in the middle of a 'sawah' / paddy field where patrons can choose to dine seated on chairs or on the wooden plank floors in small food are reasonably priced and taste amazingly delicious. If you can stand spicy food, ask triple heap of all the tiny chilli pots they provide with your main dishes. We tried both their crispy duck as well as chicken rise. As a side order, weordered a nice plate of gado-gado to food and atmosphere here are lovely. Read our transparency report to learn 14 February 2011 Last December we were there,and I just realise that I have been recommending this restaurant to my were there with friends to spend some time in Ubud and this restaurant was recommended by one our friend before so we finally to decide if this restaurant is great to try and good for value of we arrive it was pouring and hardly to get out from the car and we do not bring any umbrella,but as soon as our car parking in from of the restaurant 2 ladies come with umbrella and took us to started to order drinks and food because we were stuffing and the drink came not very long before the food. We were surprise of the service it was so quick. This restaurant specialities in duck so order duck and a pork ribs. It was delicious and the duck I had was very tender and it just the right portion. Even the Bebek Bengil/dirty duck is not better than here. This over looking rice view restaurant even made our time more enjoyable when they serve a complimentary home made coconut ice cream which we never order before and it was fantastic taste. A couple of nights earlier, we had visited and been very disappointed with the more famous restaurant "Dirty Duck" see my review of that restaurant. Tepi Sawah restaurant is to the southeast of Ubud heading towards Goa Gajah, the elephant cave. The duck had plenty of meat on it, it was juicy not dry and the plate was filled with vegetables and rice. Two of us paid 360,000 Rp including the crispy roll starters and beer, but no dessert nor wine.
